NYCLA Statement on Federal Judicial Budget – January 16, 2014

“We are very pleased that the House has passed a budget that will restore most of the sequestrationmandated cuts to the federal judiciary. Over the past year the judicial branch has struggled to meet its constitutional and statutory obligations in the face of shrinking resources,” said Barbara Moses, President of the New York County Lawyers’ Association, a 9,000 member bar association. “However we are mindful that the current budget, which now goes to the Senate, only takes the courts through the end of the fiscal year in September. Sequestration damaged virtually every aspect of the justice system, causing delays, hiring freezes, furloughs, and infrastructure deterioration, and threatening public safety. NYCLA will remain vigilant and will continue to monitor developments as this year’s judiciary budget is finalized and as next year’s begins to take shape.”
