New York County Lawyers Association Issues Statement

on the Invasion of the Ukraine

The New York County Lawyers Association (“NYCLA”) condemns the Russian Federation’s invasion of Ukraine as a violation of the rule of law. Its unprovoked aggression violates Article 2, paragraph 4 of the Charter of the United Nations — an obligation to refrain from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any State. Russia’s invasion threatens democracy and peace in Ukraine and, if left unchecked, creates a precedent that could destabilize the rule of law globally. We stand with Ukrainians who are fighting to preserve democracy in a fashion which never should have been necessary.

About the New York County Lawyers Association

The New York County Lawyers Association (www.nycla.org) was founded in 1908 as one of the first major bar associations in the country that admitted members without regard to race, ethnicity, religion, or gender. Since its inception, it has pioneered some of the most far-reaching and tangible reforms in American jurisprudence and has continuously played an active role in legal developments and public policy.
