Since its inception, NYCLA has been at the forefront of most legal debates in the country. We have provided legal education for more than 40 years.
Wild Bill Douglas was a larger-than-life figure who roamed the legal and cultural landscapes of the U.S. for much of half a century.
He carved a reputation as an ardent defender of individual rights and freedoms, yet, fittingly, he felt stifled and limited as a judge.
As a champion of liberal causes and the environment, he is remembered as a Supreme Court Justice serving from 1939 until forced into retirement in 1975 — setting a record for length of service.
Yet he faced impeachment threats and was widely reviled. Thus, his legacy remains murky.
A maverick on and off the bench, he was the epitome of woke activism — yet he courted the public’s attention and controversy through his writings and unpopular stances.
He was a divisive figure who relished breaking the rules by staking out incendiary positions on the most contentious issues of the day. He was celebrated and scorned in equal measure.
Join us to hear his story and lessons learned.
