Since its inception, NYCLA has been at the forefront of most legal debates in the country. We have provided legal education for more than 40 years.
As NYCLA’s president, NYCLA commends Mayor-Elect Mamdani’s outstanding choice of Steven Banks to serve as New York City’s next Corporation Counsel. Mr. Banks served for more than 30 years with the Legal Aid Society, rising to become its attorney-in-charge, or CEO, before he was appointed to serve as the Commissioner of the City’s Department of Social Services. He has taken a strong interest in homelessness throughout, suing the City while at Legal Aid before representing the City at DSS where he implemented policy. He is well versed in the needs of legal representation for the indigent, in both criminal and civil matters. His leadership at Legal Aid and DSS well qualifies him to lead the Office of the Corporation Counsel, which is, in effect, a 1000 attorney law firm. We look forward to working with Mr. Banks on critical legal issues.
