Stephen C. Lessard RE: Sign S7883/A10139 to Add 25 More Family Court Judges

Immediate

Past President Dear Governor Cuomo:

Barbara Moses

On behalf of the New York County Lawyers’ Association (NYCLA) and our 9,000 members, I ask you to support children and families in New York State by signing into law the recently passed S7883/A10139 that would add 25 more Family Court judges statewide.

The increase in filings statewide to 700,000 has occurred while no new Family Court judgeships have been created in New York City since 1991 and only four in counties outside the city in the last 15 years. Children and families are suffering from delays in cases ranging from foster care placements to child support payments. In cases involving domestic violence, victims fear for their safety as cases are adjourned because of crowded court calendars.

The addition of 25 new Family Court judges will enhance both access to courts and the delivery of justice for our state’s children and families. I look forward to thanking you for making this a reality.

Sincerely

Lewis Tesser

President
