New York County Lawyers Association Calls for the Prosecution of All Individuals Involved in the January 6 Attack on the Capitol Building

Last week, the New York County Lawyers Association (NYCLA) strongly condemned the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol and the American rule of law by violent extremists committing seditious acts. The heinous criminal acts committed that day pose an existential threat to our nation as they strike at the core of American democracy and the rule of law. Those that are responsible for these actions must be prosecuted to the full extent permitted by the Constitution and our rule of law. That includes those who encouraged, incited, and empowered these actions, as well the individuals that committed physical violence. No individual, including our highest political leaders, is above the law.

NYCLA calls upon our national leaders to restore public faith in the strength of our democracy and the rule of law by ensuring that every individual involved in committing, inciting, or supporting acts of sedition against our country, regardless of rank or privilege, is prosecuted to the maximum extent permitted by law. The failure to fully prosecute every individual involved, whether for the sake of appeasement or misguided expediency, would invite similar actions in the future and weaken our democracy.
