NYCLA is pleased to announce that it has signed on to the adoption of The Principles for the Independence of the Legal Profession.  We are one of the first bar associations to do so.  The Principles were prepared and sponsored by retired Federal District Judges Shira A. Scheindlin and John Jones III, in conjunction with Keep Our Republic.  The Principles seek to maintain the profession’s independence, free from coercion; respect for the Rules of Professional Conduct, including, when necessary, challenging governmental conduct; and the importance of providing for pro bono representation for those unable to pay, among other things.  All attorneys in the United States of America should be able to sign on to these Principles, and we call on them to do so.
