CELEBRATION OF A LIFE, A CAREER, A FRIEND:

NYCLA HOSTS RECEPTION FOR JUSTICE ELLERIN

NEW YORK – NOVEMBER 30, 2005 – The New York County Lawyers’ Association (NYCLA) is hosting a cocktail reception for the retiring justice, Betty Weinberg Ellerin, Associate Justice of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, State of New York, First Department, on Monday, December 5 at 6:00 PM at its Home of Law at 14 Vesey Street.

Governor George Pataki and Manhattan Borough President C. Virginia Fields have proclaimed December 5 through December 9 as “Justice Betty Weinberg Ellerin Week” in honor of the retiring justice. Mayor Michael Bloomberg, too, will commemorate this occasion.

All judges – active and retired – in all courts of all counties are invited to the NYCLA invitation-only reception, hosted by the Association’s Judicial Section, whose co-chairs are Hon. Carol R. Edmead, Supreme Court Justice, Supreme Court, New York County, and Hon. Phyllis B. Gangel-Jacob, Associate Justice, Appellate Term, First Department. Justice Ellerin was the first woman appointed to the Appellate Division, First Department and the first woman to serve as Presiding Justice of that Court. Her 29 years as a jurist are a testament to service, dedication and love of the law.

The New York County Lawyers’ Association (www.nycla.org) was founded in 1908 as the first major bar association in the country that admitted members without regard to race, ethnicity, religion or gender. Since its inception, it has pioneered some of the most far-reaching and tangible reforms in American jurisprudence and has continuously played an active role in legal developments and public policy.
