Since its inception, NYCLA has been at the forefront of most legal debates in the country. We have provided legal education for more than 40 years.
Thomas E. Dewey was a brilliant, fearless, incorruptible prosecutor who took on organized crime in New York. He then rode his legal triumphs to the Governor’s mansion in Albany. Dewey almost became the President of the United States – not once but twice. There is a consensus that he would have made a fine president if elected. Had Dewey won the White House, the entire course of American history would have been different. Dewey is an intriguing “What If” from our collective past. A forgotten figure today, Dewey deserves a better fate than to be relegated to the dustbin of “also-rans” among presidential contenders.
His many contributions to American law and politics make him a great deal more than just a footnote in our legal annals or the nation’s chronicles.
In his time, he cut quite a dashing figure in legal and political circles, and his legacy still retains its resonance. Dewey became a celebrated figure for his considerable acumen and courage as a prosecutor. Dewey’s efforts earned him the moniker of the “Racket Buster.” In so doing, he not only advanced his own political fortunes, but he entered the popular lore of the day.
He inspired portrayals of his exploits in the movies, on the radio, and even in the comics. Dewey came to symbolize the lawyer as an American folk hero, and he captured the public’s imagination. What he failed to do was to capture their hearts, and not enough of their votes.
