Since its inception, NYCLA has been at the forefront of most legal debates in the country. We have provided legal education for more than 40 years.
Join Hon. Ellen Biben, Administrative Judge, Supreme Court, New York County, as she discusses the impact of the Manhattan Felony Alternative-to-Incarceration Court (“ATI Court”), the first and, thus far, the only court in the country that systematically offers defendants of any demographic and any charge the opportunity to be diverted from the traditional criminal legal system and to avoid prison. Defendants are mandated instead to engage with community-based social services, such as education, mental health treatment, job skills training, substance use programming, and housing support.
Additional speakers include Joe Barrett, Project Director of Manhattan Justice Opportunities, a project of the Center for Justice Innovation, and two graduates of the Manhattan Felony Alternative-to-Incarceration Court, who will discuss their journeys.
