COURSE DETAILS

Richard Nixon had a tumultuous presidency, and his relationship with the Supreme Court was no exception.

After being defeated by John F. Kennedy, he was elected President in 1968 and reelected by a landslide in 1972.

Yet his five years in the White House were overshadowed by conflicts with the Supreme Court, the Vietnam War, and the Watergate scandal, ultimately forcing him to resign in August 1974 as he faced almost certain impeachment if he did not do so.

In September 1974, President Gerald Ford issued him a full, free, and absolute pardon.

As President, Nixon opposed the Warren Court’s liberalism and sought to steer the Court to the right. However, he was not entirely successful, and the Court’s own decision in United States v. Nixon effectively forced his hand and contributed to his decision to resign the presidency.
