Walk through the process of a criminal trial in New Jersey with a seasoned defense attorney turned prosecutor. Learn about pre-charge tactics, how to conduct a client interview, obtaining bail, dealing with the media, the pre-indictment conference, dealing with grand juries, pre-trial procedures and activities and plea bargains. Go through the entire trial including preparation of your client, developing a trial strategy, selecting a jury, preparing witnesses and cross examination of opposing witnesses, jury charges and developing an effective closing argument. Understand the sentencing phase of a trial as well as expungement, other post trial motions and grounds for appeal. In addition, learn about the different types of collateral consequences of a criminal conviction and how to prepare for the best possible outcome for your client from initial consultation to trial. Begin considering the collateral consequences of a criminal case from the initial contact with the client. Hear the types of questions to ask the client at the first meeting. Discover how collateral consequences can affect bail. Learn about collateral consequences to consider at pre-indictment conference, plea bargain negotiations and during trial. Special attention is also paid to the immigration consequences of a criminal conviction.
