The Threatened Federalization of Law-School Accreditation Is an Attack on the Legal Profession’s Independence

Lawyers beware: the federal government is seeking to use the Department of Education’s authority over higher-education accreditation to take control over legal education, and thus indirectly control over admission to the bar. And the government has made it clear that it intends to impose ideological requirements on legal education, which would undermine the legal profession’s independence.

Trump’s Executive Order Against Susman Godfrey L.L.P. Based on Firm’s Clients Continues to Challenge Fundamental Constitutional Rights

It imposes this punishment based on assertions that the firm used unspecified means to “degrade the quality of American elections,” funded unnamed “groups that engage in dangerous efforts to undermine the effectiveness of the United States military through the injection of political and radical ideology,” and supported unidentified “efforts to discriminate on the basis of race.”  By failing to substantiate any of these allegations, the Order violates the basic requirements of due process.

Over a Dozen Legal Organizations Attend NYCLA Summit on the Rule of Law

The New York County Lawyers Association (NYCLA) hosted a meeting of bar associations and legal organizations who are all ramping up efforts to defend against escalating attacks against judges, lawyers and the rule of law. The meeting was attended by representatives of more than a dozen groups, who agreed that the current situation requires the legal community to galvanize and work collectively to protect the guardrails of democracy.
