Speaker Introduction by: Hon. Robert Katzmann, Judge, U.S. Court of appeals for the Second Circuit
Democracy is a fragile form of governance that depends on the strength of critical institutions and processes. It also depends on a shared culture of self-governance and pluralism.
The presidency of Donald Trump has tested both the institutions and the culture of American democracy in unique ways, as the President and his supporters eschewed key aspects of the culture of democracy and challenged both long standing norms and formal processes.
What did we learn about the state of our democracy in this period? What institutions and norms held up well and which proved more vulnerable?
While it is too soon to form definitive conclusions, a tentative assessment is critical to shoring up our democracy in the future, as the challenges are far from over.
