Leveraging Cybersecurity Techniques to Protect Senior Homeowners from Fraud 1.5 NY Credits: 1.5 Skills; Transitional and Non-transitional; 1.5 NJ Credits: 1.5 General

Faculty: Roger GordonJD, MBA, President Safety Deed

Elder financial abuse and fraud targeting senior homeowners will rise in the coming decades as America ages. Perpetrators frequently employ methods similar to those used by cybercriminals, and their victims often make similar mistakes. In this course we will explore how cybersecurity techniques can be used to protect senior homeowners and their titles.

Beginning with an examination of the mechanisms of real estate fraud and the challenges faced by legal practitioners, the program will explore approaches to combating fraud in the cyber arena, including Defense in Depth systems architecture and Zero Trust design.

Then there will be a discussion of the fundamentals of public key cryptography and investigate how it can be applied to defeat bona fide purchaser and holder in due course defenses. Finally, SafetyDeed’s title protection solution will be discussed as well as how it defends against various threat actors, including: caregivers, online scammers, predatory lenders, abusive relatives, dishonest attorneys and, potentially, SafetyDeed itself.
