Learn the importance of addressing the Unauthorized Practice of Law (UPL), a cornerstone of NYCLA's founding goal of preserving the integrity of the legal profession, and a continuing issue for lawyers today.

Specifically, our panel of experts will discuss:

  • What UPL is, how it plays out in modern legal practice,
  • How the UPL can affect practicing attorneys, and
  • How attorneys can avoid negative consequences from it.

You will hear about the Brooklyn DA's office's work relating to UPL, including several noteworthy cases and what we can all learn from them, as well as:

  • how paralegals can and do engage in UPL
  • how paralegals’ supervising attorneys can prevent them from engaging in UPL;
  • how social media advertising of legal services misleads attorneys and the public; and
  • a brief history of NYCLA's pioneering work against UPL.
