Course Description:

Join NYCLA’s Fashion Law Subcommittee for an update on the state of legal issuesin the fashion industry, including a review of recent court decisions impacting fashion law, legislative activity on both the national and state levels  that impact fashion law, taxation issues  and how fashion professionals are using the trademark, copyright and design patent laws to protect their brands and designs, especially in this era of rapidly expanding and improving technology.

Special Keynote Speaker:

Prof. Susan Scafidi, Director, Fashion Law Institute, Fordham
University School of Law
: Susan Scafidi is the first U.S. law professor to
offer a course in fashion law and the author of Who Owns Culture? Appropriation
and Authenticity in American Law
(2005). She founded the Fashion Law
Institute
(www.fashionlawinstitute.com), a leading center for Fashion Law, of which she is the Director.  She is recognized worldwide as an authority on Fashion Law.
 

Panelists:

Prof. Guillermo Jimenez, Professor of International Trade at the
Fashion Institute of Technology
: Guillermo C. Jimenez, co-author of the book
"Fashion Law: A Guide for Designers, Fashion Executives and Attorneys,"
 (Fairchild Conde Nast, 2010) is an attorney as well as a full-time tenured professor. He is editor in chief of the Fashion Law resource website fashionlawcenter.com.

Hilary Jochmans, Esq. will be offering her unparalleled viewpoint on Legislative and Political issues impacting Fashion.  Hilary Jochmans is the President of Jochmans Consulting, LLC. (www.jochmansconsulting.com).  She has over 15 years of political and government experience in Washington and New York.  Most recently before founding the company, Hilary was the Director of the New York State Governor's Office in Washington. In that capacity, she served as the Governor's chief liaison with Congressional leadership, the NY Congressional delegation and federal agencies. Hilary also spent 11 years on Capitol Hill working in the US Senate, and in the House of Representatives as well as on several campaigns.  Hilary is a native New Yorker and a graduate of the University of Virginia and the George Washington University Law School.  In addition, she active in several bar
associations and completed Fordham Law School's Fashion Law Summer Intensive Program. 

Stan Sherwood, Esq. is a seasoned attorney who provides counsel on International Taxation and Business  and on other areas, to Fashion/Luxury clients such as Kering (PPR), et al. He established the Manhattan consulting firm of Sherwood Associates (www.sherwoodlaw.com) to offer large-firm capabilities and small-firm responsiveness to emerging international businesses, middle-market international companies and global conglomerates. This includes U.S. companies with existing international operations as well as companies that are first planning international expansion. Also, it includes non-U.S. companies currently doing business in the United States or those
wishing to enter the U.S. market.   He also is on the Faculty of the
Fashion Law Institute, where he teaches a course showing students how to grow
from a start-up to an international conglomerate. In addition to being a member
of the New York Bar, Mr. Sherwood is also a Certified Public Accountant.

Joseph F. Murphy, Esq.,  Law Office of Joseph F. Murphy: Joseph Francis Murphy is a Fashion Lawyer and Patent Attorney with particular focuses on Fashion Law and on 3D Printing Law. His experience includes serving as Vice President of Intellectual Property and General Counsel of a public technology company, and working in private practice for a myriad of clients, from start-ups to Fortune 100 companies including Johnson & Johnson.
